How to Complete a CAPRE Module

CAPRE modules cover a range of topics from diagnosing and treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease to breastfeeding and home fetal monitoring. It is anticipated that a new module will be added every four to six weeks. It should take you approximately one hour to complete a module.

Each CAPRE module comprises four steps:

The Bottom Line provides a quick summary of the data.

The Critical Appraisal provides more detailed information on the topic. Here you can review critically appraised information and initiate a literature search on the topic. The Automatic Literature Search is a unique feature of CAPRE. When selected, it automatically takes you to Medline. This allows you to identify any important articles on the topic that have been published since the last dated research was undertaken.

This step comprises several components. They are:

  • Identifying a patient in your practice to whom the problem applies and you think would be receptive to a new strategy.
  • Printing the Patient Information Sheet and the Physician-Patient Partnership Paper (PPPP) and presenting both to the patient. Encourage the patient to consider the recommendations. The use of the PPPP is optional. Many physicians find that using a patient-centred method without recording a formal contract with the patient is adequate. Printing the patient information sheet may be all that is required. Physicians who are concerned that evidence-based recommendations may not conform to practice in their community may find the written agreement helpful.
  • On the patient’s return visit, complete the PPPP form with the patient and negotiate an agreement based on finding common ground that is best for the patient.

Complete the Reflection Exercise with your observations and reflections on the process and consider how you might have dealt with incorporating new ideas into your practice more effectively. Also complete the Evaluation Form. Completing these forms is a required component if you wish to obtain your Mainpro-C credits. These forms are submitted on-line.
Within each module there is a Resources section. Here, you will find additional information that will help you gain a greater understanding about the topic.

Accreditation Process

To qualify for Mainpro-C credits, you need to review these procedures and complete the following steps:

  • Complete the appropriate module;
  • Complete the Reflection Exercise;
  • Complete the Evaluation.

Once you have completed these steps, Queen’s University’s Office of Continuing Professional Development will then e-mail you your certificate of participation. You must submit this certificate to the CFPC and they will then award you the appropriate number of Mainpro-C credits. (You will also be entitled to one Mainpro-M1 credit for every Mainpro-C credit earned.)
